    Rick Horrow: Profile

    President of Horrow Sports Ventures

From the creation of the Miami Heat and Joe Robbie Stadium to the $285 million campaign to rebuild the devastated community of Oklahoma City, Rick Horrow is the man behind the deals that are shaping the nation. President of Horrow Sports Ventures and facility development and strategic planning consultant to the National Football League, he is the architect behind stadium deals which have revitalized both the teams and their communities.

In addition to his widespread influence in the sports world, Horrow is also active in revitalizing public works through corporate sponsorship. He has been brought in by major American cities to breathe life into their ailing communities and to negotiate deals with corporate sponsors for the development of public facilities including performing arts centers, libraries, hospitals, and museums.

Horrow is the author of a new book, When the Game is on the Line, which reveals the people, politics and power plays behind the biggest sports deals of the past twenty years. From the man who should know, the book offers a unique and informed look at the high-octane world where big business, big politics and big sports meet. When the Game is on the Line tells the stories behind the stories, written by the consummate negotiator who knows these deals better than anyone.

At the lecture podium, Rick Horrow explores how corporate America must change its conception of business in order to prosper in this new millennium. Arguably the country’s foremost deal-maker, he discusses the shift from the buyer-seller relationship that has characterized American business for so long toward the formation of partnerships which will shape corporate America in the future. In addition, his mastery of creative problem solving and mediating conflicts between parties with differing issues make him an indispensible speaker for any organization.

Rick Horrow is the creative force behind the establishment of the Miami Sports Authority, Miami Beach Convention Center expansion, Miami Arena, and the NBA expansion Miami Heat, as well as coordinating the early stages of the development for Joe Robbie Stadium, the Lipton Tennis Center, and the Homestead Spring Training and Motorsports Complex. He structured the Greater Miami Sports Council, a marketing offshoot of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. He also co-founded South Florida Baseball, Inc., a public/private partnership responsible for enlisting corporate participation, which ultimately led to the expansion Florida Marlins.

Horrow is the facility development consultant for the NFL, working on successful public/private stadium referendum partnerships with the Detroit Lions, Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49’ers. He has also been involved in baseball facility development work for the San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians and Baltimore Orioles. His work with the International Speedway Corporation in providing long-term facility planning and development assistance, includes the development of a $197 million speedway in Kansas City, Kansas.

Horrow coordinated the largest successful single issue public facility development referendum in U.S. history, a $250 million sales tax levy for nine sports, arts, and recreational facilities for Oklahoma City. He is currently packaging similar facility initiatives for the Alabama Sports Foundation and the Metropolitan Richmond Sports Backers. He also assisted in the successful solicitation process for a National Hockey League expansion franchise for Columbus, Ohio through the Columbus Community Development Council.

A sports business analyst for CNN and Business Talk Radio, Horrow also writes a weekly sports column for CBS Sportsline.com, dealing with topical issues that affect all facets of the sporting enterprise. He assisted in the development of the inaugural sports law class at the Harvard Law School where he appears as the visiting expert on a regular basis. He received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and his law degree from Harvard Law School.
