Rich attended the Polytechnic University of New York and Northwestern University, where he received his B.S.E.E. and M.S.E.E. degrees in 1966 and 1968, respectively. Employed by AT&T Bell Laboratories and AT&T Labs since June 1966, he has had assignments in the design of customer switching and central office systems, legal and regulatory matters, network management and security. His favorite assignment took him to Mayagüez, Puerto Rico for a year as the AT&T Visiting Professor in the Departamento de Ingenieria Electrica Y Computadoras where he taught courses in computer engineering and programming languages. Prior to leaving AT&T Labs in 1998 he managed the AT&T Labs Technical Center for Customer Programs where he directed the AT&T effort to interface customers with AT&T’s researchers and developers. His interest in the trends and implications of information technology has led Rich to consult with hundreds of customers during his 32 year AT&T Career. He is a frequent keynote speaker at customer venues and has lectured at professional societies, universities and trade shows. His multimedia presentation, "A Communications Odyssey" provides a broad overview of the future technical and cultural impact of Information Technology with specific references to individual businesses and market segments. Rich lives in New Jersey with his wife Wendy, his aging Triumph TR6 and his Golden Retriever named Zoë. He enjoys running, personal computing and surfing the net.
