    Nirmalya Kumar: Profile

    Nirmalya Kumar is Professor of Marketing, Director of Centre for Marketing, and Co-Director of Aditya Birla India Centre at London Business School. Born in India, now a US citizen, Professor Kumar received his B.Com. from Calcutta University (graduating first in a class of 5,251 students), his MBA from the University of Illinois at Chicago (scoring a perfect 5.0 grade point average), and his PhD in marketing from Kellogg Graduate School of Management (winning the Marketing Science Institute's Alden G. Clayton Award for his PhD dissertation).

    Dr. Kumar has:

    • Taught at Columbia University, Harvard Business School, IMD (Switzerland), and Northwestern University.
    • Worked with 50 Fortune 500 companies (e.g., Akzo-Nobel, IBM, Sara Lee) in 45 different countries as coach, consultant, seminar leader and speaker on strategy, marketing, branding, retailing and distribution.
    • Served on the board of directors of Bata India, BP Ergo, and Zensar Technologies.
    • Made more than 100 press appearances including BBC, Business Week, CNBC, CNN, Financial Times, International Herald Tribune, and Wall Street Journal.
    • Authored, Marketing As Strategy: Understanding The CEO’s Agenda for Driving Growth and Innovation, published by Harvard Business School Press and translated into six languages. Currently writing four books, Global Marketing, The Seven Myths of Private Labels (with J-B. Steenkamp), Rare Commodity: Moving Business Markets Beyond Price to Value (with J. Anderson and J. Narus) and Brand Turnarounds (with N. Tavassoli).
    • Written more than 35 cases and teaching notes including Amazon, Red Bull, Zara, and Wal-Mart. easyJet and Medi-Cult have won three BusinessWeek/ECCH adoption awards.
    • Published three articles for the Harvard Business Review. Academic papers have appeared in Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Marketing, as well as six articles in the Journal of Marketing Research. These articles have received 700 citations.
    • Won several teaching honors, including being recognized with Business Week's highest four-star faculty rating in their 1993 guide to MBA programs.
