    Marilyn Moon: Profile

    Dr. Marilyn Moon is a Senior Fellow with the Health Policy Center of the Urban Institute, which is a non-profit, nonpartisan research organization based in Washington, D.C. that conducts research on a variety of domestic policy issues. She is also Director of the Commonwealth Fund's Program on Medicare's Future.

    Dr. Moon serves as one of two public trustees of the Social Security and Medicare trust funds. She is a Board member of the National Academy of Social Insurance and on the steering committee of the National Academy of Aging.

    Dr. Moon has written and spoken extensively on health policy, policy for the elderly, entitlement issues, and income distribution. A fully revised second edition of her book, Medicare Now and in the Future, has just been published. Entitlements and the Elderly, written with Janice Mulvey, was published in 1995. Recent articles include, "The Prospects for Health Care Reform in the U.S.," "Women and Long Term Care," and "Are Social Security Benefits Too High or Too Low?" Since October 1993, she has been writing an occasional column for The Washington Post on health coverage issues, answering questions from readers.

    Prior to her position at the Urban Institute, Dr. Moon served as the founding Director of the Public Policy Institute of the American Association of Retired Persons. She has also worked as a Senior Analyst at the Congressional Budget Office, Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee, and as a consultant to the U.S. Bipartisan Commission for Comprehensive Health Care (the Pepper Commission).

    Marilyn Moon has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin--Madison.
