Laurence Meyer

    Laurence Meyer: Profile
Dr. Meyer served on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from June 1996 to January 2002. While serving as a Fed governor, Dr. Meyer became widely known as an influential member of the Federal Open Market Committee and built a reputation for independent thinking and straight talk about monetary policy. He has been widely acclaimed for his ability to bring clarity to the discussion of the economic outlook and to demystify the process of monetary policymaking.

Dr. Meyer was born on March 8, 1944, in the Bronx, New York. He received a B.A. (magna cum laude) from Yale University in 1965 and a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1970. Before becoming a member of the Fed Board, Dr. Meyer was president of Laurence H. Meyer and Associates, a St. Louis-based economic consulting firm specializing in macroeconomic forecasting and policy analysis. The firm became recognized as one of the nation’s leading economic forecasters and has since been recognized in a 2006 study by the Atlanta Fed as having been the top forecaster over the 19 year history of the Blue Chip Economic Indicators. The firm was renamed Macroeconomic Advisers (MA) when Dr. Meyer left to join the Federal Reserve Board.

After leaving the Fed, Dr. Meyer returned to MA and began the Monetary Policy Insights service. The service offers commentaries and analysis of the U.S. economic outlook, monetary policy prospects, and fixed-income markets to financial firms and central banks around the world.

Dr. Meyer is also a fellow of the National Association of Business Economics, a member of the Board of Directors of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and a member of the Panel of Economic Advisers for the Congressional Budget Office. He is the author of A TERM AT THE FED: An Insider’s View, published by HarperBusiness in July 2004.
