Joshua Malina
|
Acclaimed Actor -- The West Wing & Jewish Activist Joshua Malina plays speechwriter Will Bailey on NBC's hit drama The West Wing. The award-winning show, created by famed playwright Aaron Sorkin, is a critics’ favorite and the latest in a long line of collaborations between Sorkin and Malina. Malina has appeared in all of Sorkin’s projects, and many other television shows and films.
Passionate about his heritage, Malina believes in instilling Jewish values in the next generation and is a devoted supporter of Israel. Among other charities, he is involved with Bet Tzedek, a legal organization that provides free legal council to poor and elderly citizens of the Los Angeles area on a non-sectarian basis. He recently raised $50,000 for the charity on Celebrity Jeopardy! Malina has a reputation in the philanthropic community for being willing to lend not only his name to good causes, but also his time and energy.
Born and raised in New York, he grew up in a traditional home and attended yeshiva. Malina has been involved in Jewish causes for more than a decade, and he now comes to the podium to discuss Jewish issues and how Judaism plays a major part in his own life.
Born in New York, Malina grew up in New Rochelle. He graduated from Yale University in 1988 with a degree in theater. Following graduation, he immediately moved to Manhattan to pursue a career in acting.
It was in Manhattan that Malina befriended the then-unknown playwright Aaron Sorkin. At the time, Sorkin was readying his play, A Few Good Men, for its New York run. In 1989, Malina made his Broadway debut in Sorkin’s courtroom drama. He eventually went on to a national tour with the company and then to a small role in the film adaptation.
The relationship between Malina and Sorkin has endured throughout the years. In addition to A Few Good Men, Malina appeared in the Sorkin-penned feature films Malice and The American President. He also landed a major role on Sorkin’s critically acclaimed sitcom Sports Night as Jeremy Goodwin.
Malina found a semi-home on television, appearing on The Larry Sanders Show, Tracey Takes On and the Emmy Award-winning series From the Earth to the Moon. His film career is equally successful, with roles in In the Line of Fire, Bulworth and A View from the Top with Gwyneth Paltrow and Rob Lowe.
A lifelong poker player, Malina was the executive producer of Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown, a six-part reality series in which Ben Affleck, Martin Sheen and 23 others face off in a charity tournament.
