John Jay Osborn, Jr.: Profile

John Osborn is one of America's best speakers on law and legal culture. He is the author of best selling novels that capture the legal world. And is a creator of award winning television shows. His most famous work is The Paper Chase, the award winning novel and film and television show that defined law school.

A law professor, Osborn not only writes and teaches traditional law courses (contracts, wills and trusts), he also lectures on the development of the image of the modern American lawyer. Starting with classical discussions of the lawyer found in writers such as Melville, Dickens and Kafka, Osborn then discusses modern depictions found in films such as To Kill a Mockingbird, Anatomy of a Murder, and A Civil Action. Lawyers find this discussion enriches their lives and practice.

Osborn also lectures on the various tensions and trends found in current American legal education. Using his own work as a starting point, he analyses developments in legal education over the last thirty years. He has lectured on this topic at law schools such as Harvard, and Trinity College, Dublin.
