Joe earned an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he was class co-president. He is one of the generative leaders profiled by Stanford Professor Michael Ray in his book The Highest Goal. Joe’s work with Griffin Hospital is attributed by the hospital’s leadership as one of the factors that has kept them on the Fortune magazine roster of The 100 Best Companies to Work For each of the past seven years, most recently in position #4 overall. Prior to founding Paradox 21 in 1994, Joe was chief operating officer for a large community teaching hospital, where he helped lead initiatives that laid the foundation for record-setting operating and financial performance. During his healthcare career he was also founding president of the Association of Air Medical Services and a leading public health activist. Joe is the author of seven books, including the international bestseller Never Fear, Never Quit, and more than a dozen audio programs. His most recent book is The Healing Tree (and for healthcare clients he also prepared a study guide entitled Healing the Hospital). Joe’s programs feature unique and innovative techniques for personal and professional success. For example, The Pickle Challenge has helped organizations transform “pickle-sucking” negative attitudes into positive energy; The Janitor in Your Attic is a powerfully effective technique for eradicating the mental graffiti of negative self-talk. His presentations are supported with innovative take-homes such as a mini-poster of The Self-Empowerment Pledge: Seven Simple Promises that Will Change Your Life. Joe’s speaking events often turn into ongoing client relationships. For example, a one-day leadership retreat conducted for Auto-Owners Insurance (a Fortune 500 company) launched a 25-state speaking tour for independent insurance agents and a customized training curriculum for the company’s associates. He wrote the book The Farmer for his longstanding client West Central, and his ongoing relationship with The Planetree Alliance has touched hospitals across the country. Today, Joe's purpose is to help people respark the spirit of mission in their work and the spirit of adventure in their lives, and to help organizations tap into the invisible treasure of that spirit to cultivate a more positive, productive, and profitable workplace. He lives with his family in Iowa, but his second home is a tent in the back country of the Grand Canyon.
