    Jeffrey Garten: Profile

Jeffrey E. Garten is a uniquely qualified speaker on the subjects of globalization, the economy, finance, trade and foreign policy. As a Professor at the Yale School of Management, he oversees the education of the leaders of tomorrow. A contributor to many leading publications, Garten wrote a monthly column for Business Week from 1997 to 2005 on major challenges facing global business leaders. He is regularly sought after to lecture today's business leaders on globalization and the many facets it encompasses.

He is the author of a number of best-selling business books including A Cold Peace: America, Japan, Germany and the Struggle for Supremacy (1992), The Big Ten: The Big Emerging Markets and How They Will Change Our Lives (1997), and The Mind of the CEO (2001), The Politics of Fortune: A New Agenda for Business Leaders (2002), and he has edited and contributed to the anthology, World View: Global Strategies for the New Economy (2000).

Jeffrey Garten's experience in business includes his service on the boards of directors of the Aetna Corporation, the Calpine Energy Corporation, and Credit Suisse Asset Management, CarMax, and The Conference Board. He has worked on Wall Street as a managing director of Lehman Brothers and the Blackstone Group where he specialized in debt restructuring in Latin America, built up and directed the Asian investment banking business for Lehman, and restructured some of the world's largest shipping companies in Hong Kong.

Jeffrey Garten has also served as the Undersecretary of Commerce for International Trade in the first Clinton administration, where he focused on promoting American business interests in Japan, Europe and other big emerging markets like China, India, and Brazil. In addition, he served on the White House Council on International Economic Policy in the Nixon administration and on the policy planning staffs of Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and Cyrus Vance in the Ford and Carter administrations.

Jeffrey Garten's speeches often pull from his research for The Mind of the CEO and his Business Week columns. In both cases he has done extensive interviewing of senior business executives around the world, and he is intimately familiar with how they are thinking about global challenges. In his columns he has addressed a wide range of issues that encompass business, global trends, and geopolitics.

One of Jeff's latest projects will be published in Foreign Affairs magazine shortly after the presidential election. The subject is "What will be the international economic policy of the next president?" While the final project will deal with whoever won on November 2, he is in a unique position to discuss what the differences would be before the election as well as to hold forth after the election about whoever did win.

Garten will address such questions as: What are the major challenges facing us in global trade, including offshoring, and how are the two candidates likely to approach that? How are they likely to deal with current deturbulence and a declining dollar in particular? How are they going to secure critical financial infrastructure in the US - from banks to food supply to port security - when that infrastructure is so linked to global networks? How should they think about the enormous challenges that face us in the third world?

Jeff Garten's unique talent is in combining business, economics and politics - in other words, in making the audience appreciate all the dimensions of the issues in which they are most interested.
