George Mitchell
|
Distinguished Diplomat and Former U.S. Senator It has been said that ?there is not a man, woman or child in the Capitol who does not trust George Mitchell,? and for six consecutive years he was praised as ?the most respected member? of the Senate. In his career as Senate majority leader, Mitchell gained the unqualified respect of the American people and addressed some of the nation?s most pressing domestic concerns, including welfare reform, quality medical care and fair tax legislation. As one of the most esteemed figures in U.S. foreign policy, Mitchell served as chairman of the peace negotiations in Northern Ireland. Under his guidance, the governments of Ireland and the United Kingdom agreed to a popularly supported accord, ending decades of conflict. Mitchell?s negotiations earned him worldwide praise, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. Mitchell, one of Washington?s most trusted leaders and effective arbitrators, brings his knowledge and experience to the podium to discuss America?s role in the global political scene, using examples from his work on Middle East issues. An expert on the ever changing European Community and the economics of the region, he examines current issues and the impact they will have on the future of international business. In addition, he draws from his highly successful peace mediation in Northern Ireland to discuss the art of egotiation. George Mitchell began his political career when he was appointed U.S. Attorney for Maine. In 1980, Mitchell was appointed to the Senate to complete the unexpired term of Senator Edmund Muskie. He became the Majority Leader in the Senate in 1989 and retired from Congress in 1995. While in the Senate, Mitchell served on the finance, veterans? affairs, and environment and public works committees. He led the fight to enact nursing home standards and evaluation of medical care outcomes. He led the successful reauthorization of the Clean Air Act, was the author of the first national oil spill prevention and clean up law, and was a major force behind the passage of the 1991 transportation bill which provided an important boost to the economy by creating jobs, rebuilding deteriorating infrastructure and assisting with mass transit needs. He also led the Senate to the passage of the nation?s first childcare bill and was principal author of the low-income housing tax credit program. He was a leader in opening markets to trade and led the Senate to ratification of the North American Free Trade Agreement and creation of the World Trade Organization. Mitchell is the author of four books. With Senator Bill Cohen, he wrote Men of Zeal about the Iran-Contra investigation. In World on Fire, Mitchell took an absorbing look at the threat posed by the greenhouse effect. In Not For America Alone: The Triumph of Democracy and The Fall of Communism, he offers provocative new insight into strengths that have not only sustained America in the past, but can also guide us into the future. In his latest book, Making Peace, Mitchell provides an account of his experience in Northern Ireland. Mitchell is a partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Piper Rudnick.
