    Christine Northrup: Profile

Christiane Northrup, MD is a pioneer in the field of women’s health who graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and completed a residency in ob/gyn at Tufts/New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

She is a board–certified obstetrician/gynecologist with over 20 years of clinical and medical teaching experience. As past president of the American Holistic Medical Association and former Clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, she appreciates the need for a partnership between the best of conventional and complementary medicine, but also understands that women’s health can improve only when we re-think much of what we’ve learned about the processes of the female body such as menstruation and menopause.

She teaches that we can each tap our potential to be healthy in the broadest sense of the word only when we understand the unity of our minds, emotions, spirits, and physical bodies. Dr. Northrup has often likened modern crisis–intervention medicine to driving powerboats around in the rapids, pulling out drowning victims and resuscitating them in high-rise hospitals. Though this is noble and beneficial work that each of us may occasionally require, her work now focuses further upstream by helping women avoid falling, jumping or being pushed into the rapids of ill health in the first place.

Her practical and in-depth approach to health concerns has much to offer regardless of one’s current position in the river. Her two public television specials, “Women’s Bodies, Women’s Minds,” and “Women’s Bodies, Women’s Choices,” debuted nationally in March of 1998 at over 100 public broadcasting stations with great success.

In August of 1999, her two newest public television specials, “Your Diet, Your Health,” and “The Wisdom of Menopause,” began airing all over the U.S. Health Wisdom for Women, Dr. Northrup’s monthly newsletter, has approximately 30,000 subscribers, and through this publication and her web site, Dr. Northrup has created a “virtual” healthcare center for women that provides ongoing and integrated support, education, and health assessment services which help women make changes in their life to achieve optimal health on all levels, regardless of their starting point.

Her work has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, the Today Show, and Good Morning America. Dr. Northrup is also the author of the New York Times best-selling book Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom, originally published by Bantam in 1994, then re-released in March of 1998 in a completely revised and updated edition.

Her book, The Wisdom of Menopause, released in March 2001, explores the gifts and challenges of midlife as a crucial turning point during which we have the potential to create a healthier life than ever before, depending upon our choices. She is also completing a book that explores how the mother–daughter bond sets the stage for our state of health throughout the lifecycle. Dr. Northrup lives with her family in Maine.
