Alan Keyes

    Alan Keyes: Profile
Former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. & American's Independent Party presidential candidate

As former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and two-time candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, Keyes is an expert on national and foreign policy issues. Keyes spent 11 years with the U.S. State Department. He served in the U.S. Foreign Service and on the staff of the National Security Council before becoming Ronald Reagan’s ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, where he represented the interests of the United States in the Assembly. In 1985, he was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations (1985-88).

He is also widely known as a leader in the moral conservative movement--due to his credentials as a constitutional scholar; extensive background in government, politics, and media; and outspoken defense of moral principle in the culture war.

Keyes was President of Citizens Against Government Waste (1989-91) and founder of National Taxpayers’ Action Day. As the two-time Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Maryland, he challenged liberal Democrats Paul Sarbanes (1988) and Barbara Mikulski (1992). In the 1996 Republican presidential campaign, Keyes eloquently elevated the national political debate. With his unequivocal pro-life, pro-family message, he forced the GOP leadership to address America's moral crisis. A Harvard graduate with a Ph.D. in Government, Keyes is also the author of two books, Our Character, Our Future: Reclaiming America’s Moral Destiny and Masters of the Dream: The Strength and Betrayal of Black America. In Our Character, Our Future, Keyes discusses the importance of restoring moral order in the republic and personal responsibility in the citizen.

Keyes is a well-respected speaker and the host of a nationally syndicated radio talk show, The Alan Keyes Show: America’s Wake Up Call. His political views are consistently based on America's founding ideals, those in the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution. President Ronald Reagan called him a “living, breathing example of how this nation can change, adapt and grow.”
