In any volunteer organization, members began motivated. Over time, their motivation begins to wane. In most cases, motivation is an external event, something that pushes people into action. When the external event ends, motivation wanes. Of course, there are also internal methods to build up motivation. These are self-motivation techniques, methods that attendees can learn and easily apply to their lives.

Gary’s presentation begins with examples of how easy it is to lose your motivation. He then provides examples of the five motivators in a person’s life. Each person can use these motivators to motivate themselves to take the desired action. These motivational methods are not only useful in a volunteer organization, but also useful in every aspect of their lives. Additionally, these same techniques can be applied to others, in order to motivate them into action.

Gary’s principles are based on several premises

1. When limitations are removed, people are energized.
2. Small and simple changes in your life often create dramatic results.
3. Incentives and motivation drive our lives and the results we get.
