He has lectured and taught workshops extensively throughout the United States and Europe for organizations, associations, conferences, festivals and schools. He works with audiences of all sizes and is able to tailor the content and length to the specific needs of each group. His audiences include professionals, students and the general public. He is a master storyteller who, with humor and compassion, offers unforgettable creative insights to people of all ages who are concerned about global communication, social activism, media literacy, creativity and education. Making a Difference: The Art of Joey Skaggs The renowned artist and socio-political satirist presents a hilarious, provocative retrospective of his work and shows how he uses the mass media as a conduit to address his concerns. He discusses the issues that motivate him including cultural intolerance and insensitivity, sex and violence in the media, inequities in the American judicial system, misuse of power and authority by government and big business, mass media manipulation, and more. Illustrated with video documentation, Skaggs covers the funniest and most searing of his work from the 60's to the present. He then gives his audiences an opportunity to address their own issues, either in the form of Q&A or in a unique problem solving workshop. Media: Politics, Power & Persuasion A shocking exposé of the workings of the global news media by one of today's most vibrant, funny and creative socio-political commentators. This presentation is hilarious and outrageous. However, while Skaggs makes people laugh, he also makes them think. Among the many messages are: question authority in all its forms, don't give up critical analysis for wishful thinking, and look to more than one source for information. The audience will constructively reevaluate all preconceived ideas about the role of the media in their lives. Social Activism Through Media Manipulation With the advent of new technologies, opportunities abound for using unorthodox alternatives to conventional avenues of communication. This workshop/seminar was developed as a class entitled "Culture Jamming and Media Activism" for the Media Communications Department of the prestigious School of Visual Arts in New York. As a brief or length workshop/seminar, it offers an interdisciplinary exploration of techniques to communicate ideas and grab attention, including satire, performance art, fine art, theatre, video production, writing, graphic design, and advertising and public relations techniques. Attendees will identify and focus on social issues of importance to them; analyze possible solutions; construct arguments for and against them; decide which are likely to succeed; and consider how to initiate action.
