    Positive Performance Management
Positive Performance Management is a performance development process and management system that enables organizations to build:
    • an environment of continuous improvement and development,
    • fully participating partnerships,
    • individual responsibility and ownership, and
    • trust, loyalty, and commitment to individual and organizational excellence.

It replaces or enhances existing performance management policies and practices with an approach that stresses personal responsibility, open communication, mutual respect, teamwork, results, and relationships.

PPM: The next generation of performance management

What would happen if the majority of your employees-the ones who do a good job every day-improved their performance by just 1% next year?

Every organization has its stars. There are also a few employees who should either improve or move on. These two groups demand most of every manager's time. They are important, but the hidden potential for your organization lies with those employees who do a good job every day. They represent performance, productivity, and results.

Positive Performance Management gives your managers the tools to help people improve regardless of their current performance. Like traditional systems, Positive Performance Management communicates expectations, provides recognition, holds people accountable, and ensures defensibility when formal action or discharge is required.

Unlike traditional approaches, Positive Performance Management recognizes that today's managers and team leaders must influence results and build strong relationships across the entire spectrum of associates.

Positive Performance Management provides the systems and skills necessary to:
    • encourage superior performance,
    • handle disciplinary problems in a fair, defensible and nonpunitive manner, and
    • develop employees whose performance is acceptable today but must continue to grow to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

Why Positive Performance¨ Management is right for today's organizations

Traditional performance management approaches assumed individuals must be controlled through punishment. Enlightened approaches that followed added much needed emphasis on recognition and dealt with performance problems in a nonpunitive manner. Both approaches were right for their time, but they do not create the environment needed to compete in the face of increasing demands.

Positive Performance Management goes beyond the approaches of the past while maintaining their best features. Organizations adopting Positive Performance Management:
    • maintain the due process and documentation requirements vital for fairness, consistency, and defensibility,
    • incorporate a nonpunitive discipline process appropriate for today's team-oriented and professional environments,
    • utilize coaching and recognition tools,
    • develop techniques and processes to encourage individual responsibility and continuous improvement,
    • create an empowered environment where continuous learning exists, and
    • cultivate fully participating partnerships built on a foundation of trust, open communication, and mutual respect.

Making the move to Positive Performance¨ Management

Implementing Positive Performance Management begins with a discussion about your current policies, practices, environment, and objectives.

Pennington Performance Group will work with you to design a complete Positive Performance Management system or implement a specific portion of the process to complement your existing efforts.

The comprehensive installation and training materials allow you the flexibility to customize the entire process to fit your needs.

Pennington Performance Group works with you to:
    • build support among decision makers and stakeholders,
    • involve representatives from throughout the organization to design the new approach,
    • build understanding, support, and commitment within the entire organization,
    • develop measurement and evaluation tools to confirm success,
    • provide education and skill building for managers, team leaders, and employees, and
    • manage the process to ensure ongoing success.

    Facilitation
Skillful facilitation resembles a tap dance, shuffle, and tango all performed simultaneously to the unique rhythm of each group. The purpose is simple, to help the group reach its goals by utilizing its own experience and strengths. The facilitator focuses the group's energy, encourages open discussion, and guides the meeting to a defined end. The role of facilitator requires knowledge and experience in meeting management, group dynamics, moderating discussion, asking the right questions, and group decision making. The skilled facilitator frees the group to focus on the task at hand without worrying about the process.

    Our Approach

Every organization has its uniqueness and challenges. We develop specific results-oriented strategies and activities to help your group achieve its objectives. Working in partnership with you, we will:
    • Define session objectives and outcomes
    • Define the facilitator's role (moderator, topic expert, etc.)
    • Identify decisions to be made and their acceptable parameters
    • Develop a profile of the group
    • Research the meeting content to ensure understanding of issues to be addressed
    • Assist with meeting agenda, room setup, and logistical issues as needed
    • Develop specific activities and meeting format to keep the meeting moving, encourage participation, and achieve your desired goals

Randy Pennington has facilitated interactive sessions with groups ranging from 5 to 500. His experience includes conducting focus group sessions; moderating customer/industry expert panels; leading partnering seminars; facilitating Board of Director and strategic planning retreats; and guiding an entire community's visioning process.
