The dynamics of relationships between men and women, both at work and at home, have changed dramatically. Although there are many individual differences in communication, research has uncovered some interesting trends in differences between the sexes. Specifically, differences in verbal and nonverbal communication will be identified. Suggestions for improving communication between the sexes will be offered. What You Don't Say Means A Lot: Nonverbal Communication We speak volumes without uttering a single word. Nonverbal communication is a complex process involving people, words, voice tone, and body movements. This seminar explores how factors like gestures, posture, facial expressions, inflection, and pitch influence how the verbal message is received. Attention will be given to how nonverbal communication operates in the presentation of self, enhancing and maintaining credibility, and eliminating mixed messages as well as cross cultural considerations. Dealing With Difficult People You may call them "inhuman resources" they are difficult people. They can be sneaky, back stabbing, sulking, sarcastic, or indifferent. Dealing with them is a challenge and often leads to feelings of hopelessness and frustration. This seminar identifies six different types of difficult people. Strategies for dealing with contentious tactics including manipulation, guilt, blame, sabotage, bullying, lying, refusal to engage, and others that will be outlined. Tactics for disarming games and maintaining sanity will be emphasized. The Lost Art Of Communication: A Talent For A Technical Age You cannot not communicate. Everything you say and do sends a message. Today's technology, such as email and the Internet, has made some of our communication faster and more accessible. "Telecommunication" is a misnomer. We have lost the human interaction. This seminar brings communication into consciousness and supplies tools to help you send the message you want. Practical exercises, self-assessments, vignettes, and case studies are used to help participants overcome barriers and enhance and improve the human moment in communication and their daily lives. Stop Sexual Harassment Before It Begins: Identification, Prevention, Strategies and Actions Company diversity policies, public enlightenment and common sense have made most people aware of what constitutes blatant sexual harassment. Maintaining that awareness is crucial. There also exists a gray, nebulous area of sexual harassment that is much more difficult to define. This seminar explores the known, the unknown gray area, strategies to prevent sexual harassment and what to do if it does. The seminar covers federal guidelines and incorporates your organization's policy on sexual harassment, if it has one. Victors Without Victims: Managing Conflict For A Positive Outcome Conflict is inevitable. Anger, blame, and grudges are not. Conflict is normal and natural and occurs in every arena of life. We can't avoid conflict, but the way we deal with it will determine whether it is a constructive or destructive force. This seminar will focus on guidelines and techniques for opening the lines of communication, boosting morale, and fostering teamwork in conflict situations. Listen . . . And Be Listened To! Of all the elements within our communication repertoire (i.e. writing, speaking), we spend the greatest single percentage of our communication time listening - approximately 45%. Ironically, failure to listen accurately is considered by experts as the greatest single problem in communication at all levels among all people. This seminar will focus on the skills necessary for listening and identifying the barriers that block this process. People Who March To A Different Drummer: Valuing Cultural Diversity Racism is pervasive, its effects devastating, the need to overcome it urgent. Our world becomes smaller every day. We increasingly find ourselves working next to people of different cultures and geographies. While few would argue that American industry has made progress in promoting women and people of color into middle-management positions, American corporations have failed to effectively address the challenges of diversity in the workplace. Men & Women Working 9 to 5 Attitudes about the sexes have had to change as more women have entered managerial and ownership roles. The Hudson Institute states that the single most significant change in the American workplace is the equal capability of men and women to do the same work. Women surpass men in college enrollment and earn nearly the same number of Ph.D.'s. Women represent nearly 50% of the workforce. This seminar addresses issues vital to men and women successfully working together, such as sex role behavior, style differences, the makings of a professional relationship and achieving middle ground. WOMEN'S TOPICS: THE 12 A'S TO AXE The book, Paths to Power, identifies seven one-word socio-psychological issues beginning with the letter 'A' that afflict all women. I added five more to the list. They are my "dirty dozen," and include issues like affability, anger and accessibility. These issues are ingrained in women's upbringing and are almost our "job description." Learn how to recognize your own deadly A's, manage them, and incorporate tactics into your communication repertoire to gain greater credibility, presence and assertiveness. SPEAKING FROM A POSITION OF STRENGTH Women are "programmed" from birth with communication patterns that undermine their credibility. Learn how to maximize your credibility through communication, to eliminate some less assertive speech patterns and nonverbals, and what communication behaviors contribute to enhance your credibility. THE HOWDY DOODY SYNDROME: WOMEN, NONVERBAL BEHAVIOR AND POWER Women are known as excessive smilers. They smile to ensure the good will of others and diffuse conflict. Smiling is often an attempt to placate. Smiling and other nonverbal behaviors that serve to undermine women's power, as well as how these behaviors operate in the communication context in everyday interactions, are identified. The role of nonverbal behaviors as "off-the-record" and their contribution to the meaning of a message are stressed. THE BALANCING ACT This presentation focuses on the stress and demands on women in balancing home and work. An historical perspective of the multiple roles women have played in society will be discussed. Current research on the effects of balancing two roles is highlighted, and recommendations are offered. Guilt, perfection and prioritizing will also be explored. THE FEMALE ADVANTAGE: WOMEN'S WAYS OF COMMUNICATING Women are the champions of interpersonal communication. They are superior to men in empathy and expert readers of nonverbal signals, a so-called contributor to "women's intuition." Women have a high Emotional Quotient, according to the research of Daniel Goleman. Women are known for their listening skills, which explains why both men and women prefer to self-disclose to women. Learn how to capitalize on the female communication advantage in daily life. MANAGE FOR SUCCESS: THE WOMAN SUPERVISOR This program is designed to address the issues that women supervisors encounter. Learn how to enhance your credibility, to speak and act assertively, to work effectively with the "good old boys," how to avoid the "Queen Bee" syndrome, and other ways to develop confidence, increase skills and gain support within your organization. THE SKY IS THE LIMIT This seminar helps women see their own potential in order to succeed in the world of work and daily life. We identify necessary characteristics for success, address the additional challenges women of color encounter, investigate how power operates, explore how to enhance credibility and assertiveness, the benefits of networking and mentorship, as well as how to manage anger and emotion for a positive result.
