    Pat Heim: Program Outlines

    Executive Coaching
Executive Coaching provides a one-on-one phone conferencing with Dr. Pat Heim. From leadership development to conflict management you will work with Pat to identify your goals and develop strategies to attain them. Many executives have found Pat's coaching to be the most efficient way to manage their organization and their careers.

    Gender Differences
Men and women have learned different lessons about "appropriate" team work, problem solving and leadership. We have grown up in different cultures, but those differences are often difficult to see-let alone manage. This humorous keynote addresses the central factors that drive gender-related communication problems and emphasizes the importance of men and women valuing each other's strengths.

    Effective Communication Skills
Surveys repeatedly indicate that the number one barrier to effectiveness at work is communication. This workshop focuses on differences in communication styles, as well as how to flex our own style to meet the needs of the other person. We also discuss the most common barriers in communication and develop strategies and techniques to deal with these barriers. Participants create a plan to communicate more effectively.

    Productive Conflict Skills
How do you deal with the person who barges in and blows up? What do you do with the co-worker who constantly creates problems for you but won't talk about what's wrong? Conflict is a reality of organizational life. But often we just react rather than respond strategically. This workshop covers 15 strategies to make difficult discussions more productive. Covered are problems such as how to respond when attacked, find out what the conflict is really about, and prevent defensiveness.

    Conducting Productive Meetings
Meetings can be useful, interesting and motivating, OR painful, boring and wasteful-it all depends on how they are managed. This workshop focuses on making the time we spend in meetings as productive as possible, as well as interesting to all in attendance. The workshop also focuses on the needs of the individuals who called the meeting and the participants to ensure that they all meet their needs during the meeting.

    How To Handle Difficult People
Nothing is more frustrating than having to deal with an impossibly difficult person. Whether it is the hostile bully who attacks for no reason or the super agreeable who smiles, promises everything and delivers nothing, difficult people can drive us to distraction. The difficult person prevents us from being productive and destroys the morale of others. This workshop teaches strategies for dealing with difficult people in general, as well as specifics for handling the most common types: the bully, sniper, know-it-all, and the chronic complainer.

    Building Effective Leadership Skills
Today's business world requires that leaders accomplish more with less. With more people to manage and more productivity required, good leadership skills are key. In this workshop, you will learn the importance of vision in leadership, how to choose an appropriate leadership style, how to set goals for success, how to manage the problem employee, and how to motivate for improved performance. You will be able to identify and manage different communication styles and better recognize the most common barriers in management communication. The overall goal of this workshop is that you know how to 'let go' and delegate, direct without destroying, and communicate with an understanding of your employees' communication styles.

Hiring The Right Person: Interviewing Skills
One of the most painful experiences for both managers and employees occurs when the wrong person is hired for a job. Yet the interview process is often vague and muddled. In this workshop, you will learn the balancing act it takes to conduct an effective and productive interview. You will learn how to determine what you need to know, set up the interview, and recognize what important information you are not being told. You will also learn questioning techniques and how to establish rapport. This workshop clarifies what one needs to know about a prospective employee, how to get that information, and what the employee needs to know to prevent "surprises" after the hire.

    Conducting Effective Performance Appraisals
The performance appraisal process can strike terror into the heart of an employee or it can create opportunities for positive, productive discussions. It all depends on how the process is managed. In this workshop, participants will learn why it is important to appraise performance, what the appraisal interview should consist of and accomplish, and how to set future goals. This workshop addresses the cycle of performance appraisal, what needs to be done throughout the year, and how to conduct the interview. The actual forms your organization uses can be incorporated into the workshop.

    Coaching And Counseling
Dealing with employee problems can be one of the most stressful aspects of a manager's job. To make it more difficult, often a problem is not easily identified. It may be the job, home life, co-workers, or even-the manager. In this workshop, you will learn how to set goals with employees, the three sources of employee performance problems, the impact of expectations on employee performance, counseling do's and don'ts, steps in counseling employees, and disciplining without destroying. This workshop focuses on what you can do to prevent employee problems and how to manage a problem once you have it.

    Developing Your Team
The effectiveness of any group is impacted by its ability to work as a team. Because a group works together on a regular basis does not guarantee a team effort. This workshop is designed to meet the needs of a particular group. You will learn how to build a strong team through diversity, identify an appropriate leadership role, motivate group members, and devise an action plan for development. You will also come away with an understanding of how teams develop, common barriers to building a team, managing differences, and creating cohesion among team members.
