Former Republican United States Senator Mark Hatfield is an American political legend. He was first elected to the Oregon Legislature in his late twenties and after two terms became the youngest Secretary of State in Oregon history. He went on to win election as Governor of Oregon in 1958 and became the state's first two-term governor. In 1968, Mark Hatfield was elected to the United States Senate and quickly distinguished himself as a leading voice for human rights, nuclear disarmament, and the peaceful resolution of international conflicts. He also became a major influence for improving health, education, and social services programs.
