Described by the Almanac of American Politics as one of America's most original "governors, former Governor of Arizona and Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt's advocacy led to passage of a nationally acclaimed state water management code in 1980, and in 1986 of a water quality act described by the Los Angeles Times as perhaps "the nation's toughest law to protect underground water." Babbitt is perhaps best remembered by American school children as the Secretary who brought the wolves back to Yellowstone. The author of Cities in the Wilderness, in which he lays out a new vision of land use in America, Babbitt is presently working on conservation issues in the Amazon Basin as a fellow of the Blue Moon Fund.
