Dennis FitchDennis Fitch -- Illinois USA, 5.0k to 10.0k
On July 19, 1989, Captain Denny Fitch was aboard United flight 232 from Denver to Chicago when the DC-10 lost all hydraulics and all flight controls. He and the crew hold the record of longest time aloft without flight controls. Captain Fitch was commended by President George Bush for his outstanding effort, poise, and courage in assisting the crew in attempting a difficult emergency landing at Sioux City, Iowa. Recognized for his extensive experience as a flight instructor and check airman, Fitch is an FAA check pilot designee and a safety consultant to NASA as a member of the Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel. He has been inducted in to the Aviation Hall of Fame at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC.
