He was fired from a $150,000 per year consulting job and decided to form his own company. Determined, and confident, Alan Weiss, Ph.D., president of Summit Consulting Group, now runs a million dollar consulting firm out of his home. With no full-time employees, he has achieved remarkable success by "breaking all the rules". Rather than be constrained by conventional wisdom or doing it like others in his field, he defined his own path. In a recent interview, I asked Alan about his career and business. He identified the essential elements of success that are important in any field. - A well-defined sense of humor--
Humor alleviates stress, gives you a perspective and keeps you centered. Humor is the ability to view troublesome events in a positive light. Our sense of humor is based on our beliefs; about the world, about people and about ourselves.
- A support structure that enables you to rely on other people--
This includes your family, professional mentors, business associates and friends. You need people who ‘keep you honest’. That is, they encourage you when there is a dip in business and keep you humble when things are going well. They offer you concrete feedback so you are always improving.
- The ability to read with comprehension–
Reading a large diet of both fiction and non-fiction broadens your expertise, stimulates curiosity and gives you the ability to connect with people. Reading with comprehension means reading ‘between the lines,’ taking the information and applying it to your life.
- The ability to write with expression–
Whether a business letter, an article or a book, you must be able to write so people want more; more information, more service, and more you. Your writing should peak their interest and have them asking for more.
- The ability to speak with influence–
You need to speak in a way that results in attention; you need to command the room. Whether in a meeting, a business conference or an interview, you need to speak assertively and with language that people admire.
- The ability to listen with discernment–
You have to listen to others in such a way that you can tell what is really important to them. This takes a great deal of effort for you have to focus on them rather on what you want to say next. This allows you to connect with people in a rare way that leads to better relationships and better business. How many of these success characteristics are evident in your life? Do you find humor and laughter each day? Are you spending time for learning and expanding your knowledge base? Success is a process that can be refined and enhanced. Put your effort into building your skills and you will find success beyond your wildest dreams. © Barbara Bartlein, R.N., M.S.W. - All Rights Reserved.
